The depiction of the press and their battle for scoops and headlines is terrific, the kind of social history I spend my professional life looking for in literature. And so it is with books. These items are shipped from and sold by different sellers. Book club choice for February from Sue, and it’s taking us back a few years, published in Disliked it enough that it stuck in my memory, although details are fuzzy.
There’s a preponderance of strong female characters – not entirely unusual for Wyndham, but they almost entirely dominate, making a nice change, and all with different voices.
The two central characters are Diana Brackley and Francis Johhn, two biochemists who run parallel investigations into the properties of a specific species of lichen after Diana notices that a trace of the specimen prevents some milk turning sour.

Francis, realising the implications for the world of an ever-youthful, wealthy elite, wants to keep it a secret, but Diana sees an troubls to overturn the male status quo by using the lichen to inspire a feminist revolution. But this short novel is mostly to do with the greed and manouvering that occurs both at governmental and private levels once the truth about this strain of lichen is realised.
Not as chilling as Midwich Cukoos, Lichen is still a dandy page-turner.
I was afraid the book would turn out to be misogynistic or sexist, but a felt it was more short sighted in its worldview. And what about overpopulation and food resources?

Diana, young and female, continues onwards, seeing it as giving humanity the change to grow wise and change the world for the better. It would, however, make for an excellent little primer on the perils of longevity, for instance, as supplementary reading in a bioethics course.

Interesting and entertaining enough, but if you’ve read or watched any SF, or philosophy, or have even dreamed yourself, you have your own ideas, and Wyndham’s are, well, odd.

She came across as a spoiled and petty child. This book is beautiful.
The moral, sociological and ethical issues the book considers and discusses are not irrelevant now and still raise a lot of interesting questions for the reader. Diana tries to cover up the real source of the drug, since the lichen is very rare and difficult to grow, but when it is finally discovered she fakes her own death in the hope of inspiring the women of Britain to fight for the rights she tried to secure for them.

His prose is crisp and powerful. Wyndham is reflecting a very conservative society in his alternative present-day, because his plot of altered life expectancy requires a very conservative society to be broken apart by its implications. Penguin are reprinting five of his sci-fi novels, and I picked on this as it jjohn the one I was least familiar with.
